Take Action to Protect Community Use of Memorial Park
Oshawa City Council is considering changes to the permitting criteria for Memorial Park that could limit longstanding community events, including labour gatherings and celebrations that have taken place there for generations. For more than 100 years, Memorial Park has been a central gathering place where workers, families, and community organizations have come together to celebrate milestones, mark historic moments, and build community.
A motion is coming before Council on Monday, March 23rd, from Councillors Derek Giberson and Jim Lee, that will allow debate on the future use of the park and whether events like the Durham Region Labour Council’s annual Labour Day celebration can continue to be held there.
We are asking residents and community members to take action now to ensure City Council understands how important it is to keep Memorial Park an inclusive public space — one that reflects Oshawa’s history, honours its working-class roots, and remains open for community events that bring people together.
Send a letter today and let Council know you support fair and inclusive access to Memorial Park.
