Town Hall: Bill 33 & the Role of Trustees in Schools

November 10, 2025 at

IBEW East Location 1001 Ritson Rd. S Oshawa, ON L1H4G5

Bill 33 is a power grab! It marks a major shift in Ontario’s education system by allowing the provincial government to strip power from locally elected school board trustees and replace them with unelected political appointees accountable only to the Minister of Education and the Premier. This moves centralizes decision-making at Queen’s Park, undermines community voices, and ignores the real issues facing schools – underfunding, large class sizes, and inadequate staffing. For unions and education staff, the removal of trustees would reshape collective bargaining, make school more politicized, less transparent, and less responsive to local needs.

Join the Durham Region Labour Council for a critical Town Hall discussion about the impacts of Bill 33, the role of school trustees, the future of public education, and how we can organize to fight back.

Panelists include:

Dr. Sachin Maharaj, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, Policy, and Program Evaluation at the University of Ottawa

Jennifer French, Oshawa NDP MPP

Robert Cerjanec, Ajax Liberal MPP

Tracy Brown, Durham District School Board Trustee.
